Another Surfshark vs NordVPN review? Well, what else can I do? These two are pumping out updates annoyingly fast: there was a merger, some completely new features… AND I’ve got some new speed and streaming test results, so that’s gonna be exciting to share.


🔎 Security comparison 🔎

Since data protection is the primary point of a VPN, I wanted to start this Surfshark vs NordVPN comparison by taking a look at their security. Behind the curtains, these two best VPN candidates are actually pretty similar. Both use the next-gen ChaCha20 encryption and both have implemented RAM-based servers.


🔦 Security-focused features 🔦

I found functional kill switches to avoid IP leaks; obfuscated servers to mask the VPN connection; and a double VPN function, which chains two VPN servers for some extra security. In the Nord vs Surfshark comparison, NordVPN stands out a little with the Onion over VPN feature.

🦈 Surfhark Nexus & Antivirus 🦈

It’s a great addition to Surfshark VPN security. I’m still waiting to test the IP randomizer and Dynamic Multihop, but the IP rotator already works and it’s a great tool to avoid cross-site tracking.

Last year, Surshark introduced the Surfhark One bundle for Windows, where alongside a VPN, I was able to test their antivirus too. This year, they prepared a real-time protection feature and introduced the antivirus to Macs.

NordVPN speed test stayed very similar to what I got last time, so no major notes here, great performance as ever. Surshark speed test also showed blazing fast speeds - but I noticed some improvements in upload speeds, where it stumbled last time.


✏️ The main difference - different capabilities ✏️

NordVPN has one of the most feature-heavy Mac apps. Sure, there’s no split tunneling, but I found everything from an advanced kill switch to presets, pretty handy, especially for torrenting.

Meanwhile, Android users might prefer Surfshark. There’s a special feature on the Android app, that’s called GPS spoofing. It’s great for changing locations on Instagram or Snapchat.


🎥 How well do they work with streaming? 🎥

Which VPN should you get for Netflix, Surfshark, or NordVPN? Overall, I didn’t encounter any buffering and the streaming experience was smooth with both VPNs. I’d say this whole thing depends on how many libraries you want.

Last time I checked, I was able to unlock 29 foreign libraries with Surfshark and… NordVPN opened just 8, actually. It covers all the main ones through, from the UK to Japan and Canada too, of course. But Surfshark VPN wins by quantity.


🔑 Torrenting capabilities 🔑

My NordVPN review revealed a free SOCKS5 proxy and P2P-optimized servers. One small little nitpick - not ALL of the servers are optimized, so your traffic might get re-routed through a different location, keep that in mind.

My Surfshark review, however, revealed that all of their servers are optimized for downloads, but there is no free SOCKS5 proxy. So, for this part of the Surfshark VPN vs NordVPN, it’s kind of push and pull - so you’re gonna have to decide which factor is more important to you.

All things considered… which VPN is gonna be more worth it, Surfshark or NordVPN? As I said throughout this Nordvpn vs Surfshark VPN comparison, it really depends on what you need. Nord, as it stands, has a bit more features and a clean privacy & security slate, but it will cost you a bit more. Meanwhile, Surfhark is gonna be great for those who want great streaming along the privacy features, and for those of you who are looking to share accounts.
