NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Having five or more blistering sunburns before you're 20 may increase you risk of melanoma by 80 percent, according to a new study by the American Association of Cancer Research.
Researchers followed close to 109,000 Caucasian nurses for 20 years and found that those that suffered serious sunburns early in life also saw their risk of other skin cancers increase by 68 percent.
Doctors urge parents to re-apply sunscreen regularly, invest in u-v protective clothing and stay out of the sun between 10 am and 2 pm
"One person every hour dies from melanoma in the United States and that leads us to about ten thousand per year predicted to pass away from melanoma this year," said Dr. William Stebbin, dermatologic surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
