Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche teaches running with the mind of meditation both as a personal practice and as a way to help the world.
"I think in the West sometimes the body and mind have been split up; so when people think about meditation or spirituality, they think it's very much distancing themselves from body per se. They are actually meant to be united."
"...same with any kind of sport or activity. ...whatever it may be; there's the kind of mind-body coordination. And that's inherent; because the notion of meditation is that you're synchronizing your mind with your body."

"Running with the Mind of Meditation: Lessons for Training Body and Mind" by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.
Publication Date: April 10, 2012
The book offers fresh insights into the activities of meditation and running, and the ways our running experience can be dramatically enhanced by working with the principles of meditation. The book also provides a path of practices that we can apply daily as well as on the trails.
As a Tibetan lama and leader of Shambhala (an international community of over 200 meditation centers), Sakyong Mipham has found physical activity to be essential for spiritual well-being. He's been trained in horsemanship and martial arts but has a special love for running. Here he incorporates his spiritual practice with running, presenting basic meditation instruction and fundamental principles he has developed. Even though both activities can be complicated, the lessons here are simple and designed to show how the melding of internal practice with physical movement can be used by anyone - regardless of age, spiritual background, or ability - to benefit body and soul.

"I have always found a natural relationship between running and meditation. Running can be a support for meditation, and meditation can be a support for running. Running is a natural form of exercise, for it is simply an extension of walking. When we run, we strengthen our heart, remove stagnant air, revitalize our nervous system, and increase our aerobic capacity. It helps us develop a positive attitude. It creates exertion and stamina and gives us a way to deal with pain. It helps us relax. For many of us, it offers a feeling of freedom. Likewise, meditation is a natural exercise of the mind—an opportunity to strengthen, reinvigorate, and cleanse. Through meditation we can connect with that long-forgotten goodness we all have. It is very powerful to feel that sense of goodness: having confidence and bravery in our innermost being."
