Thousands of anti-racism demonstrators gathered outside an immigration centre in Walthamstow, east London, echoing a message of unity. Protesters chanted slogans such as “fascists gone,” “off our streets” and “refugees are welcome here”.
Walthamstow was among more than 30 locations across England where far-right rioters were expected to show up on Wednesday evening. However, the counter-protest outnumbered them, amid ongoing violent disorder in towns and cities across the UK.
For days, the country had been rocked by turmoil caused by far-right rioters targeting Muslims, minority groups and migrants. The racially fuelled attacks were triggered by online misinformation after three children were stabbed to death and eight others injured at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport on 29 July.
Although the police reported that the 17-year-old suspect was born in Cardiff, misinformation spread rapidly online that he was a Muslim “illegal immigrant”, sparking an attack on a mosque in the same town and subsequent riots. On Thursday, the suspect, Axel Rudakubana, was named after reporting restrictions were lifted. He appeared in a Liverpool court to face charges.
