How does glutathione support energy production? One of the little-known functions of the body’s master antioxidant, glutathione, is that it's responsible for producing energy in your cells. Learn all about how glutathione and energy levels are connected in this video, from the perspective of expert nutritionist Amanda Callenberg.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: All cells in your body, except red blood cells, produce energy. This occurs in the mitochondria, otherwise known as the cell powerhouse. The mitochondria converts the food you eat into ATP, which is essentially food for your cells. The process of producing ATP also creates harmful free radicals, which cause oxidative stress.
Glutathione helps to protect the mitochondria from oxidative stress by neutralising these free radicals. If free radicals damage the mitochondria, its ATP production slows down and the cell gets sluggish! As you can imagine, sluggish cells cause you to lack energy yourself, so it’s important to keep energy production up at a cellular level.
If your cells don’t have enough glutathione, symptoms like tiredness, lack of mental focus, brain fog, and muscle fatigue can arise.
