12 LUH + 15 LCH + 60 NUH
Indian armed forces are moving now at a quicker pace in order to strengthen their aviation wing. Recently we have seen three new development in this regards. The first one came in November 2021 when DAC had approved the proposals worth Rs. 7,695 crores for the Armed Forces Modernisation which includes twelve Light Utility Helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Once the 12 LSP LUH order is complete, HAL will start the series production (SP) of LUH.
42-48 ALH Rudra for IAF
Now, as per the latest report from The Tribune, Indian air force is looking to procure three squadrons of Rudra. One squadron of Air force has 16 Rudra, therefore we can expect the proposal for 48 ALH Rudra from IAF. A case for the procurement of Rudra is being moved to the Ministry of Defence.
This is going to be massive order for the ALH Rudra and will greatly boost the fire power of Indian air force. The new procurement plan was the result of impressive performance by ALH Rudra at the high altitudes of Himalayas and deserts of western frontier. As reported the helicopters has performed very well in the high-altitude plateau and sensitive Depsang plateau in Northern Ladakh during stand-off. The Helipads in these locations are at an altitude of more than 15,000 ft and air is very thin which possess greater challenge for an aircraft to fly. HAL Rudra has even outperformed the Chinese gunship WZ-10 fielded against the Rudra during the stand-off.
About Rudra
The HAL Rudra mark IV, also known as ALH-WSI(Weapon system Integrated), is an armed version of HAL Dhruv which is designed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The helicopter can be used in both unarmed and armed roles that include reconnaissance, troop transport, anti-tank warfare and close air support. At present IAF operates one squadron of Rudra with 16 helicopters and Army has 75 Rudra in service and 25 more on order.
Weapons of Rudra
Rudra is equipped with forward looking infrared (FLIR) and Thermal Imaging Sights Interface. It has a French Nexter 20 mm turret gun, Belgian 70 mm rockets, and MBDA’s Mistral air-to-air and indigenous Helina ATGM. Mistral is an infrared homing missile, which is capable of striking the targets within a range of 6.5km and Helina can neutralize a target from a range of 7KM. In a typical anti-surface configuration Rudra can carry 4 Helina ATGMs – 2 on either side and 24 guided or unguided rockets – 12 on each side. All these systems have been tested individually multiple times from Rudra. In fact the reent two trials of Helina missiles carried out this month was from the Rudra.
Saab’s Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS)
If we talk about the electronic warfare and countermeasures – Rudra has all what is needed for a modern day helicopter. It is protected via an extensive electronic warfare suite which is provided by the South African division of Saab Group; this suite comprises various defensive elements to guard against several different threats, these include a radar warning receiver (RWR), laser warning receiver (LWR) and a missile approach warning (MAW) system, IR jammer, chaff and flare dispensers. The Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) from Saab AB, with electronic warfare self-protection is fully integrated into the latest glass cockpit of Rudra. These systems are soon going to be indigenized as well and we have recently made a detailed video on this.
Powerplant and Performance
Rudra is powered by 2 × HAL/Turbomeca Shakti-1H turboshaft engine which is a JV between French Engine manufacturer Safran and HAL. Each engine can generate power of upto 1,068 kW (1,432 shp). The helicopter exceeded the payload and performance requirements at the height of 6 km. It has capacity of 12 passengers + 2 Pilots Crew. It has Max takeoff weight of 5,800 kg, range of 590 kms and Maximum speed of 280 km/h.
