I'm going through the top 20 Favorite Video Game Songs of all time as voted on by my community. This came in at number 6!
I don't think it's a hot take to say I LOVE this song. It's in my opinion one of the absolute greatest video games songs ever written. I had heard it before even playing the game and the version I heard first was actually CSGuitar89's cover of it, which prompted me to actually play the game. I enjoyed the game a bit but it wasn't my favorite Mario game, but that didn't stop me from being absolutely blown away by the feeling you get from experiencing this song in the game.
I always take songs like this with a heavy responsibility, and this cover was no exception. I spent a huge amount of time arranging the song and seeing what I could do with it that would elevate it in my style and I was really happy with where I landed. I try to do key changes sparingly, but this song seemed like it was screaming for it when I brought the chorus back the second time so I really spent a good amount of time making a transition that felt like it would have been written for it.
What many people who've covered this song might find is that the harmony is much trickier than you might expect. I was immenesly helped by my friend 8BitMusicTheory's video on the song, making sure I had the correct chords, extensions, and inversions and really leaned into making them work for the style rather than simplify it for big power chord guitars. That's something I've been really trying to respect in these past few covers.
For the mix of this one, I really tried to go as basic as possible. With tons of orchestral elements, I actually did this mix mostly with just volume fader mixing and only used plugins if I felt it was absolutely necessary. I landed in a place that I wasn't ecstatic about the actual sounds of everything, but everything felt clear and heard in a way I haven't been able to nail previously. Other than my usual Parallax bass tone, I didn't use any software amps and just used basic patches from my Axe FX and tried to just let them shine. It's a bit different from how I usually do things, but I figured I'd try to let it breathe for once. Hope you enjoy how it sounds!
Thanks so much for watching! This is the 6th highest song on list of your most favorite video game songs of all time. Subscribe if you haven't already and see the top 5 video game songs of all time!
