In this video, we’re diving deep into Elder D. Todd Christofferson’s powerful talk, "Burying Our Weapons of Rebellion," from the October 2024 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Christofferson draws inspiration from the story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies in the Book of Mormon, who buried their swords—literal and symbolic—to overcome temptation and fully commit to God. The key to their enduring conversion is profound, and Elder Christofferson’s message is just as relevant for us today.
This talk struck a personal chord with me, as I recently had a vivid and symbolic dream leading up to General Conference. In the dream, I saw a peculiar sword made entirely of stone. Though its material seemed unusual, the stone sword was incredibly sharp, able to cut through anything. Its strange appearance and symbolic power left me pondering its meaning. Little did I know that Elder Christofferson’s words would answer my questions and tie everything together.
Throughout the scriptures, swords are often used as symbols of power, rebellion, and sacrifice. Elder Christofferson refers to the converted Lamanites who laid down their “weapons of rebellion”—not just their swords of war, but also their sinful behaviors and disobedience to God. These brave men and women understood that burying their weapons was the only way to overcome temptation and secure their enduring conversion.
As Elder Christofferson says:
“The key to the enduring conversion of this people is stated in the next verse: ‘For they became a righteous people; they did lay down the weapons of their rebellion, that they did not fight against God any more, neither against any of their brethren.’”
This statement is life-changing because it invites us to examine our own weapons of rebellion. What are we holding onto that keeps us from experiencing the full blessings of the gospel? Is it pride, anger, addiction, complacency, or disobedience?
The stone sword I saw in my dream felt deeply symbolic. Swords are typically made of metal, representing strength and power, yet this sword was stone—a material often associated with firmness, permanence, and even the rock of Christ. Despite being stone, the sword was razor-sharp, capable of cutting through anything. To me, this dream represents the Word of God (sharper than a two-edged sword) and the importance of cutting away everything in our lives that prevents us from coming closer to Him. It also reflects the strength we gain when we bury our rebellious weapons and build our lives upon the rock of Christ.
But the symbolism of swords doesn’t stop there. In my dream, I also felt that swords represent our divine responsibility to defend our faith, our family, and our friends—especially against the falsehoods spread online. Every day, there are those who try to convince members of the Church to doubt their faith and turn away from God. However, we have been empowered to stand firm, to wield the Word of God, and to defend what we know to be true. Like the Anti-Nephi-Lehies who made a covenant of peace, we can be both defenders of truth and followers of Christ.
“And now behold, my brethren, … it has been all that we could do … to repent of all our sins and the many murders which we have committed, and to get God to take them away from our hearts, for it was all we could do to repent sufficiently before God that he would take away our stain.”
Repentance requires action. Sometimes, we must go beyond surface-level change and make permanent commitments to bury those weapons, ensuring they can never harm us—or others—again.
What Are Your Weapons of Rebellion?
As you reflect on Elder Christofferson’s talk and the incredible example of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies, I invite you to ask yourself:
What are the “weapons” in my life that keep me from fully following Christ?
How can I bury these weapons, so they are no longer a temptation?
How can I stand as a defender of faith, family, and friends in today’s world?
The process of burying our weapons isn’t easy, but it is necessary. When we let go of rebellion and disobedience, we make room for God to take away the stain of sin and replace it with His love, peace, and strength. And as defenders of truth, we can help others see the light of Christ even in a world full of confusion and doubt.
