Toyota and Subaru delighted car enthusiasts the world over when the companies released a pair of rear-wheel-drive sports cars in 2011. Light, affordable, and focused on a back-to-basics driving experience, the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 – known in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S – were all we’d pined for for years.
With the Scion brand gone, Toyota has finally rebranded the FR-S as the Toyota 86 in the U.S. market. The automaker also took the opportunity to update its rear-drive toy, giving it a little more power, various suspension tweaks, and a visual makeover. Is that enough to keep the high-thrills, low-buck sports car relevant, or does it erode some of what made the 86 so cool in the first place? Find out in our latest Why Buy?
