Nipah is a bat-borne virus that the World Health Organization has named one of their top-priority pathogens. It’s been around since 1998, but in September there was an outbreak in India that killed two people.

This is India’s 4th Nipah outbreak in the last 5 years. Nipah has a high mortality rate – killing between 40 and 70% of the people who contract it.

So far, human-to-human transmission has been limited, which is crucial to preventing a pandemic. But experts worry Nipah may mutate and become more deadly.
