🦠 A deadly virus has been capturing headlines... but what is it... and should you be worried?
Nipah is a bat-borne virus that the World Health Organization has named one of their top-priority pathogens. It’s been around since 1998, but in September there was an outbreak in India that killed two people.
So why a virus with such few cases is getting so much attention?
This is India’s 4th Nipah outbreak in the last 5 years. Nipah has a high mortality rate – killing between 40 and 70% of the people who contract it.
So far, human-to-human transmission has been limited, which is crucial to preventing a pandemic. But experts worry Nipah may mutate and become more deadly.
With vaccines in the pipeline and health experts on high alert, the focus now is on staying ahead of the virus.
