Orthographic mapping activities are extremely powerful for learning to read. They are also one of the Science of Reading's favourite tools, as they align with the process that goes on in our brain when we are learning to read and storing words in our long-term memory for immediate retrieval when reading.
In this video I go through 3 different Orthographic mapping activities that you can easily do with your child or your students when learning to read.
2 of the Orthographic Activities that I demonstrate in this video are for learning high-frequency words. The other one, you can use it for any word.

The activities I present to you are simple and do not require fancy materials or a lot of preparation.
Studies have shown that we need around 5 repetitions of this process to store words in our memory, even though the final number or repetitions that we need depends on a series of factors that I explain on the video.
Even though it may seen complicated, the Orthographic mapping process is just tying together the individual sounds we hear in words to their graphic representation or letters. Sometimes the letters can be the expected ones (phonetically regular words) or they can present unexpected spellings (irregular words). In this case, we may need more repetitions, but the process works just the same.
