African and Black diaspora film festivals are held worldwide, all year round. These events highlight the excellence of African cinema and Black talent from Africa and the African diaspora. While these festivals connect African film producers, buyers, and audiences with the rest of the world, they also increase visibility and recognition for African identity, knowledge and culture – often bypassing economic, class and racial barriers. Some of these festivals also serve as a platform for highlighting social, economic or health issues that affect people of African descent.
On this episode of Our Voices, our hosts review the rise of black cinema, and explore how African and black film festivals in the diaspora help expand the entertainment industry to other parts of the world.
