(19 Dec 2013) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Thursday as he continued his tour of the Middle East.
During a news conference, the two leaders talked about the Iranian nuclear issue.
Peres said the international community, including China, must ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
"The world, in which China is a major player, should help the Iranian people to divorce themselves from the policies of threat and hostilities and to prevent her from acquiring nuclear capability and serving as (a) centre of terror", he said.
Last month the US, China, Britain, France, Russia and Germany brokered an interim agreement with Iran over its nuclear programme, following years of deadlock.
Israel called the deal a "historic mistake" and said sanctions against Iran offered the best chance for a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue.
Wang said on Thursday that all sides involved in the talks must "fully comply with their respective obligations and responsibilities", in order for peace to prevail in the region.
On Wednesday he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
