Diverticulitis Diet - What To Eat
Diverticulitis is a condition in which small, bulging pouches called diverticula grow in your digestive tract, most often in the colon (large intestine ). Diverticula are common after age 40, and when you have them, you are said to have a condition known as diverticulosis. However, sometimes diverticula become infected, inflamed, and painful at which time the condition becomes known as diverticulitis.
A diet is one of the more effective ways to minimize discomfort from diverticulitis by making it easier for your system to digest food.
For the few days. you should stick with clear liquids only, such as the following.
* Broth, water or ice chips
* Tea or coffee without cream
* Fruit juices without pulp, such as apple juice
* Clear ice pops (no bits of fruit or fruit pulp)
* Gelatin
As your condition improves, you can slowly add low-fiber foods such as these.
* Canned or cooked fruits without skin or seeds
* Canned or cooked vegetables
* Eggs, fish and poultry
* Refined white bread
* Fruit and vegetable juices with no pulp
* Low-fiber cereals
* Milk, yogurt, and cheese
* White rice, pasta and noodles
Your doctor will want you to resume eating normally as soon as you can.
You may have to take antibiotics while you're on your diverticulitis diet. You should feel better in two or three days. However, if you develop a fever, experience worsening abdominal pain, and you're having trouble keeping clear liquids down, there might be complications that require hospital care.
