Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Acrylic Arts Academy. Today, we’re diving into a Family Portrait Abstract that combines vibrant colors and textures to create a unique, impressionistic piece that’s perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike!
Here’s what you’ll need:
Canvas: 8x10 inches, stretched cotton
Acrylic Paints: Mid Grey, Yellow Ochre, Titanium White, Cobalt Blue, Lamp Black, Ultramarine Blue, Orange, Crimson Red, Magenta, Golden
Brushes & Tools: Stationary Sponge, Filbert Brush
Steps:
Lightly mist one side of your sponge with water and the surface of your canvas as well. This helps the paint spread smoothly.
Apply drops of grey, yellow ochre, white, and cobalt blue onto the sponge, then use it in a top-to-bottom motion to create a soft, striped background.
Once dry, sketch abstract outlines of family members with black paint. Keep these loose and impressionistic.
Using the filbert brush, fill in the figures with patches of color, starting with ultramarine blue, orange, and red, then layering in yellow ochre, cobalt blue, white, magenta, and more to add depth.
Add contrast by painting black patches at the corners, followed by layering white and blue around them.
Frame the borders with strokes of gold and magenta for an elegant touch. Use orange and gold along the bottom to add warmth.
As you work, feel free to blend or let certain areas stay distinct. Remember, abstract art celebrates spontaneity—so let those textures and accidental strokes add character to your work! Experiment with color placements and layer textures to make this piece uniquely yours.
