Tapirs are forest animals that love water. Although many of them live in forests on land, tapirs that live near rivers and lakes spend a lot of time in and under water, feeding on soft aquatic plants, hiding from predators, and simply swimming. The Brazilian tapir often sinks to the bottom of a river and then feeds by moving along the riverbed.
