9 Things to Stop Buying - How to Save Money Fast
This video was sponsored by DataCamp
There are a number of impulse purchases that we are all guilty of making that will most likely be stored away to never use again or just stuff we don’t need but think we do.
These small costs can add up over time and they keep us from making unhealthy financial decisions.
I go over 9 unnecessary things that you should cut out from your budget to help you save money fast.
Single-Use Kitchen Gadgets
There is a kitchen gadget for just about everything that at the moment we think we might need but chances are we’ll forget them after just one use. Unless you think it’s a total necessity and you find yourself needing it daily, there is probably no need to buy things that are meant for one-time use. Not only do they take a large amount of space in your kitchen, normal kitchen appliances probably accomplish the same results.
Exercise Equipment
While we try to save on a gym membership, chances are we turn to expensive gym equipment that we probably will not use. While buying exercise clothing or small items such as a pair of weights are okay, buying heavy machinery is probably not necessary to get a good workout in. There are a number of good workouts that you can do for a fraction of the cost and youtube also has a variety of fitness videos that are completely free.
Magazines
Over time the costs add up when you buy individual magazines. They place these conveniently by the registers so that you are more inclined to make an impulse purchase. Chances are you can find these stories online for free or purchase a subscription that offers a year’s worth of magazines for a fraction of the cost of just one magazine.
Paid Apps
Some apps may be worth purchasing, but most of the time you can find a free version of the app you’re looking for. The best apps are usually free but take the extra time to do some research before making an impulse purchase on paying for an app.
GPS
Your smartphone has the power to do so much without the added costs that we used to pay for such as a GPS subscription. We used to have to pay hundreds for a GPS and now they are available to us for free and even built into cars already.
Taking Expiration Dates Seriously
Of course, some perishable food expiration dates do hold some authority, but an expiration date doesn’t mean the end for some. Assuming that you keep items well stored, some items can go past their initial expiration date. Items like uncooked pasta or cereals are usually still good past their expired date and there are some items such as raw meat or bread that will expire but can be stored in a freezer to keep past that date.
Landline
Most of us already have the burden of paying a large cell phone bill each month and having a landline is probably isn’t necessary for us anymore. It may still be useful for people who live in places with spotty cell phone service but it’s otherwise not needed.
Bottled Water
It’s beneficial not only for our planet but to make healthy financial choices to consider using a reusable bottle than to purchase water bottles. Water flows right from our sink or fridge and we are conditioned to think that we should purchase water instead. Purchasing a Britta filter or some time of water filtration system can help us keep a little bit more change in our pockets.
Paying full price for clothes
There are an enormous amount of rewards systems that are available to us that can help us avoid paying full price for an item. Keep an eye on the item that you do want, and wait till it is discounted. Sometimes by waiting you’ll have enough time to decide if you actually want the item. Some thrift stores offer a great selection of good quality clothes that last us much longer than cheap new clothing would.
The goal is to identify the things that really are worth spending our money on and second-guessing the things that are commonly overlooked. While some things may seem like a necessity, it can be helpful to identify habits that we make to cut back.
