Rahul Gandhi, the Member of Parliament from Wayanad, has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha as a result of his conviction in a criminal defamation case brought against him, which has come as a major shock to the Congress party.
A Surat court convicted Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case for saying ‘why do all thieves have the name Modi’, and sentenced him to two years in prison. The remarks were made during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
As per the Representation of the People Act, 1951, a person is disqualified from being a member of Parliament if he or she has been convicted of a criminal offense and sentenced to imprisonment for two or more years.
The Congress party has expressed its disappointment with the verdict and has stated that it will pursue all legal options to challenge the decision.
