MaximsNewsNetwork: 10 August 2010 - W.H.O. Geneva - The World Health Organization (WHO) today declared an end to the H1N1 flu pandemic following advice of an emergency committee. However at a teleconference, WHO Director General, Dr Margaret Chan, said that the virus was expected to continue to circulate like a seasonal flu for years to come.
At a virtual press conference today in Geneva Chan announced that based on experience with past pandemics, "we expect the H1N1 virus to take on the behaviour of a seasonal influenza virus and continue to circulate for some years to come."
WHO stressed that stockpiled H1N1 vaccines were still effective and should be used to protect risk groups such as children and pregnant women.
More than eighteen thousand people died from the virus since the start of the pandemic in June 2009. However WHO says it will take at least a year to determine the true death toll, which is likely to be much higher.
