MAKE brings together the brightest minds to share ideas that strengthen the local pizza industry. We caught up with Slice's in-house expert on SEO for some tips that'll help your business.
Ratish Naroor, VP of SEO at Slice:
"I think about, sleep, and dream everything SEO. So, I’m super excited. Let's do “What the [beep] is SEO?”. Let's definitely do that.
Around four million people actually search for “pizza near me” every month and you can definitely drive all those people, or a majority of them, to your website or to your brand, and make them loyal to you.
There are roughly more than 100 million searches actually happening on Google just for pizza. There's a lot of people searching for large chains. “Domino's near me” is the highest, where we saw 1.5 million people just searching for a Domino’s near there. And you can do the same thing.
I was trying to understand how much GrubHub is actually taking of your branded traffic to their platform. And here is a good example. The first result is actually the website of that particular restaurant, but one of the links goes to GrubHub. So, all that branded traffic has already gone to GrubHub and they charge 33% in fees right there.
When we actually work with a restaurant, we make sure that you don't end up paying higher fees. And, if you look at, from top to bottom left to right, it's all powered by Slice or the restaurant owner's website so that none of the traffic actually goes to GrubHub and you don't end up paying large fees.
I would highly recommend that when you are looking at your brand profile, you look at your search engine results page. The first thing: search for the name of your restaurant and the city on Google. Check for NAP. NAP is a very important term for local SEO. NAP means: Name, Address, and Phone number. You want to make sure that's 100% accurate.
Whatever you have, it’s very important that the category is actually named “pizza” instead of Italian. Italian can be a secondary category, but not the primary category. Description, address, about us... this is super important information because a lot of people are searching for it on Google. On Google, 70% of the searchers actually are informational. They actually do some kind of research before deciding, 'Oh, I want to try that particular pizza place.' Sometimes they check for reviews, sometimes they look for how expensive your pizza is, before actually ordering.
Navigational is more of looking for your address. And, when it comes to transactional, which is less than 15% of the queries that happen on Google, they're really ready to actually eat pizza.
