I did this split WITHOUT finding the queen and WITHOUT
a new queen to install. I am banking on the bees to raise
their new queen. I knew as soon as I’d completed the split
which hive the existing queen was in from the different
noise each hive was making - the “queenless roar”. So the hive without a queen has been my focus over the last six weeks - if they don't manage to raise a new queen the colony would be doomed and therefore I would have to intervene either by buying a mated queen and installing her or giving them young brood from another hive and therefore another chance at raising their own. So you can imagine I've been eagerly checking on the hive's progress weekly!
First thing to look for a few days after a split - has the
hive without a queen begun to raise a new one?
Must look for the presence of queen cups.
If the split has been successful, 4 to 6 weeks later you
should see brood in the hive! All brood from the existing
queen will have long hatched by now, so fresh brood
means a new mated queen!
