On 27 May Brighton-based pension fund member Sarah Hazlehurst made a five-minute statement to the East Sussex Pension Board, following the hand-in of 450 signatures on a petition calling for fossil fuel divestment & Brighton & Hove representation on the decision-making body for the East Sussex Pension Fund (the local government pension scheme covering East Sussex, Brighton and Hove.)
Brighton & Hove employees make up more than a quarter of the Fund’s roughly 77,000 members and pay over a third of annual contributions to the Fund, but have no say in the Fund's decisions.
In a clear violation of the spirit of the official guidelines on ‘Open and accountable government’, the ‘independent’ Chair of the Board, Ray Martin, refused to allow members of the public to film the meeting.
