STORYLINE:
Teachers in northeastern Argentina clashed with police after breaking through fences protecting a provincial legislature on Thursday as protests by public employees demanding salary increases continue.
The teachers fighting the provincial government in Misiones are taking part in a national strike as protests by police, doctors, and other health workers have continued for nearly a week.
The national government has cut budget transfers to Argentine provinces as it implements its austerity measures implemented by President Javier Milei, which were intended to balance the accounts and tame inflation.
Some groups of teachers are camping on one of the avenues in Posadas, the capital of Misiones, and others are blocking a national route.
Protesters pointed out that teachers belonging to the lowest ranks should earn at least 700,000 pesos per month (about $770).
Meanwhile, health workers occupied the provincial health ministry's headquarters and demanded a 100% salary increase.
In turn, police officers who were on strike and have also occupied the police headquarters for a week have warned that the authorities would have to make “an extraordinary effort” to meet their expectations for salary increases.
