Here are three tips for renters to get their security deposit back after they move out. Don’t let an itemized statement surprise you. At the end of the lease, before you move out, do a walk-through of your rental property and complete these suggested tasks.

Patch holes in your walls. If you and your roommates only added a couple small pinholes, you probably don't need to worry about money being taken out of your security deposit. That’s normal wear. But if you peppered your walls with little tiny holes or created bigger holes, those will be noticed in the move-out inspection. If you want to get back the full amount of the security deposit from your lease agreement, this is crucial.

Uninstall window AC. This will be considered existing damage. If you don’t remove it, your landlord will see it during their final inspection and they will add it to your list of deductions.

Remove TV mount. If you mounted a TV, you probably put some pretty big holes in the wall. This is beyond ordinary wear. A landlord will pay someone to remove it and take the money out of a tenant’s security deposit. Remove your TV, remove your TV mount, and patch the holes in the wall.
