What Is The Story Behind The Birth Of Kauravas?

We all know that Dritarashtra and Gandhari had one hundred sons but is it even possible for someone to give birth to a hundred children? As stated in Sambhava Parva, Gandhari, a huge devotee of Lord Shiva was blessed by Sage Veda Vyasa to have one hundred sons. After having received this boon, Gandhari became pregnant with the child of Dhritarashtra. She bore the child in her womb for nearly two years without any signs of delivery. In the meantime, Kunti had given birth to her first son Yudhishtira, who she heard was as radiant as the morning sun. She became restless by the wait of two years and in her frustration, she hit her womb with great force. Due to this force, she went into labour and instead of delivering a baby, she delivered a mass of flesh.

Angry and disheartened, she called upon sage Vyasa and gave him the news. She also accused him of giving her false blessings and hopes. Sage Vyasa tried comforting Gandhari and with utmost confidence said that his words are never false, and his boon cannot go futile.

He asked Gandhari to get one hundred pots filled with ghee ready. Upon sprinkling some holy water on the mass of flesh, he began cutting the flesh into hundred pieces. Gandhari suddenly had a desire to also have a daughter and shared her wish with the sage. The sage cut one extra piece, thus ending up with one hundred and one pieces of flesh. He then carefully put each piece of flesh in all of the pots and stored them in a secret spot. Vyasa strictly informed Gandhari to not open the pot until he says so. After many months, Vyasa saw the first child of Gandhari and Dhritarashtra being born from one of the pots. The couple named their first son, Duryodhana. This son was born on the same day as Bhima, the second son of Pandu. Within a month, the other 99 sons and 1 daughter of Dhritarashtra were born.
