Facing an outcry over plans to rapidly integrate Russia and
Belarus, the Kremlin announced Tuesday that it would endorse
only a shorter version of a union treaty due to be signed
Wednesday.
The opposition, led by the Belarussian Popular Front, organised
numerous meetings and demonstrations to protest the closer ties
with Russia.
