Prague Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its outstanding cultural and historical value. It holds the title of being the largest ancient castle complex in the world according the Guinnes World Records. It covers an area of approx. 70,000 square meters (750,000 square feet).
But don't expect a Cinderella or Frozen type castle. This is a complex that includes several palaces, churches, gardens etc.
The most famous are St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, the Basilica of St. George, and the Golden Lane.
Prague Castle has been the seat of Czech kings, emperors, and presidents for over a thousand years.
The castle was founded in the 9th century and has been continuously expanded and renovated throughout its history.
You can explore its many courtyards, gardens, and historical buildings. Highlights include the grand halls of the Old Royal Palace, the intricate architecture and magnificent interior of St. Vitus Cathedral, and the charming Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička).
The castle complex showcases a variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. This diversity reflects the castle's long and varied history.
St.Vitus Cathedral, the centerpiece of the castle complex, is a prime example of Gothic architecture.
ST. VITUS CATHEDRAL is the most prominent and largest church in Prague, known for its stunning Gothic architecture and beautiful stained glass windows.
A significant and ornate monument located within St. Vitus Cathedral is the Cenotaph of St. John of Nepomuk.
The cenotaph is situated in the central nave of the Cathedral, making it one of the most prominent and eye-catching monument.
St. John of Nepomuk was a Czech priest who became a national saint and martyr. He is considered a protector against floods and a guardian of the confessional seal.
He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1729.
More about him you can find in our video "Make a wish on the famous Charles Bridge".
The cenotaph is a masterpiece of Baroque art and is made primarily of silver.
GOLDEN LANE is a charming street lined with colorful houses, originally built in the 16th century, was home to the castle guards and later to goldsmiths, which is how it got its name.
Each house has a history of various tradespeople and residents over the centuries.
DALIBORKA TOWER was built in 1496 during the regn of King Vladislav II. It was part of the castle's fortifications and served as a defensive tower and a prison.
The tower is named after its first prisoner, Dalibor of Kozojedy, a Czech knight who was imprisoned there in the late 15th century. He was a minor nobleman who became a folk hero. According to legend, he sheltered rebellious serfs and was subsequently imprisoned in the tower.
Dalibor learned to play the violin while imprisoned, and his music could be heard across the castle, so people were coming to the tower and listening.
ST. GEORGES SQUARE is located within the Prague Castle complex, nestled between the Old Royal Palace (which we will visit in Part 3 tour) and St. George's Basilica (that we will visit in Part 3 as well).
The square has been a central part of the castle's layout since the early medieval period. It served as a key public space for various activities, including official ceremonies and gatherings.
