This was the groups' 2nd appearance on 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour'. Their 1st was in 1967. Actually the group at this time was still known as 'the 1st Edition'.Kenny Rogers & the 1st Edition would be official months later.
In this performance you will see that Mike Settle gets a lot of face time.That could be because he is the writer of the song.
The song was also a major hit for country star Bill Anderson in '69,& covered by Dolly Parton in 1981,that version topped the country charts.
Interesting note on this performance...during the false ending near the end of the song,someone flipped on the applause sign & the audience clapped all through the remainder of the song.Someone must have been sleeping during rehearsal..oops! In my audio remix,I left out the false ending clapping so that you hear the rest of the song the way this lip-synced performance should be.
