The UNESCO – UN Women Joint Programme promotes rural women’s empowerment through the creation of job opportunities that capitalize on the cultural assets of Um el Jimal, an archaeological site in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The project aims at the creation of tourism services supporting visitors’ stay at the site, including hospitality services, education and information services, and the production of locally handmade souvenirs embedding the cultural significance of the site. The project contributes to mitigating the harsh impact of the Syrian crisis on the host community of Mafraq Governorate, by improving livelihoods conditions for most vulnerable sectors of the society, notably rural women, in one of the country’s key poverty pockets.
