Protecting the pathways rivers create and allowing the river to renew itself: this is what river restoration is all about. We believe that the EU needs to protect the last wild rivers and continue with ambitious river restoration agenda through removal of dams and restoration of floodplains and wetlands. With the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 setting specific targets to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems, specific examples of how to do this are helpful. The evening will present the inspiring examples of the Wild and Scenic Rivers concept in the US and the dam removals on the Elwha river, and discuss the prospects of a growing network of strictly protected rivers across Europe - healthy, dynamic and free-flowing.
Speakers:
Prof. Dr. Klement Tockner, Austrian Science Fund / Alliance for Freshwater Life
Eef Silver, Wetlands International / Dam Removal Europe
Hans Stielstra, Deputy Head of Unit for Clean Water, Directorate-General for Environment, European Commission
David Moryc, American Rivers
Moderators:
Tobias Schaefer, Living Rivers Foundation
Michael Bender, Flow Europe
