“Paintings, drawings, sculptures, figurines and, unconditionally, costumes are here. We focussed our attention of the Bolshoi and Mikhailovsky theatres for this project. The Alexandrinsky theatre gave us access to its wardrobe departments. At some point, we were even afraid that the Manege and its 4,500 square metres of exhibition area would not be enough to store everything.”

“We have in fact unique items, for instance, house slippers of Tchaikovsky kindly provided by the museum of Tchaikovsky in Klin. These slippers have never been outside the museum. Therefore, the fact they are being exhibited here is a great success.”

“We conducted a study, especially for the exhibition, on how the plot of the Swan Lake has changed. On the second floor, we have the laboratory of Swan Lake, where we demonstrated some main milestones of changes to the story. Not only does the public not know that in 1887 the plot was also absolutely different, many specialists don’t know this.”

“We go through two, not very well-known, but good examples of elements of the classical ballet in terms of anatomy. These are (moves) grand jete pas de chat and the shoulder lift, or “the chair”. The soloists of the Mikhailovsky theatre Marat Shemiunov and Irina Peren helped us with this. In the specially created videos, we demonstrate what the muscles are responsible for from the point of view of anatomy.”
