In this week's landscape photography episode, I take a chance on shooting west at dawn, banking on a forecast of thick, heavy clouds to create moody and dramatic conditions. With little expectation of a colourful sunrise, I headed to Port Willunga, home of the iconic jetty remains affectionately known as 'the sticks.' What greeted me was far better than anticipated—a stunning display of muted tones and beautifully subtle hues that perfectly complemented the brooding sky. The jetty’s weathered posts stood steadfast amidst the shifting light, providing the ideal anchor for a composition that allowed the dramatic clouds to share the spotlight.
To make the most of the scene, I experimented with a mix of long and short exposures, harnessing their distinct qualities to bring out the best in both the jetty and the atmospheric sky. Taking things a step further, I decided to time blend two images, seamlessly merging the soft, ethereal feel of a long exposure with the sharp, detailed texture of a shorter one. The result is a truly unique interpretation of this iconic location—a combination of natural drama and artistic intent that celebrates the interplay of light, shadow, and texture.
I specialise in large format print focusing on creating fine art images best viewed on a wall.
