DMM have updated the standard ice-clipper construction from plastic to metal with a model they’ve dubbed ‘The Vault.’ The obvious disadvantage of The Vault compared to plastic ice clippers is its increased weight coming in at either 61 or 72 grams depending on whether you select the wire gate or locking model. However, other than this obvious downside, the Vault does look to have a number of important advantages over its plastic rivals. For one, the Vault’s metal construction makes it sturdier and more robust, allowing it to stand up to tougher conditions on the hill. This metal construction has also allowed DMM to offer a locking option for the Vault which can be engaged and disengaged easily. This means that the Vault can function as a standard racking carabiner on ice pitches, while switching to a locked storage biner on the more gear-loosening terrain of mixed chimneys and the like. Undoubtedly a specialist piece of gear, but if you’re looking to push yourself on testing mixed routes it could prove a great way of keeping your expensive axes and ice-screws secure.
