One of the most exciting products of converged applications is unified messaging. Unified messaging is a software application that allows you to get all your messages in one place. That means voicemail from your desk phone and your cell phone, faxes, and email, are all collected in one inbox that you can view when you log on to your computer. You can see all your messages at once, and open the most important ones first. When one of your friends leaves you a rambling 3-minute message about the movie she saw the night before, you can save it for later and listen to your work-related voice messages first. You can even have your computer read you your email or print out your voicemail in text format.
Most people spend at least 20 minutes when they first get into the office listening to voicemail, then walking to the fax machine to read faxes, then logging on to the network to read email. If you could see all your messages at one time, you could spend those extra minutes on something more important - like checking the baseball scores - or working on that big proposal to score that big deal.
Convergence enables unified messaging by tying multiple servers together to gather voice, data, and fax information in one place. Again - one system, instead of many, simplifies business, saving time and money.
