In production since 2020 for model year 2021, the seventh-generation Sonderklasse will receive a mid-cycle refresh in 2025 for 2026. Spied in Maybach specification while testing in Germany and near the Arctic Circle, the luxury sedan flaunts minor aesthetic tweaks that include starry lighting signatures.
Pretty obvious both up front and out back, the star-themed lights add that little bit of visual drama to the luxury sedan that often dominates the segment. Unfortunately, the Sonderklasse did lose a bit of market share to the BMW 7 Series, which – including the i7 – moved a few more units than the S-Class did in the US in the first nine months of 2024.
The numbers are 6,908 examples of the 7er compared to 5,846 for the S-Class, with the Audi A8 finishing dead last. As it happens, the A8 series couldn't do better than 1,232 deliveries in the United States market during the nine-month period. Turning our attention back to Merc's redesign of the Sonderklasse, a slightly larger front grille is featured as well.
