The passing of time is something we all experience, but it’s something that most of us seem to think we have no control over. That doesn’t have to be the case.
The search for finding the secret of slowing down time is as old as the search for Atlantis or El Dorado, but if you consider that we all experience time in relation with our own experience of it, it doesn’t have to be something set in stone
If you remain the same through time and just live the same 6 months on repeat twice a year for years in a row, no wonder time flies by. It’s just the same experience that takes up a smaller and smaller proportion of your total life time.
The thing I’ve noticed is that if you actively choose to get better at something, you can really set yourself for a different relationship with time. If you have distinct phases of where you were compared to where you are, you can chart your progress through time. You’ll have clear differences that you can realise since you’ll be getting a little better each day, and that will add up over time to where you’re at now. That way, your perception of time, when you look back in hindsight, can be seen through the lens of progress and improvement, which you can use to reframe your perception of time passing.
The solution? Choose to work towards getting better at something, regardless of what that is for you, and you can start to have an entirely different perception of time passing.
