This indicates that Amazon’s weak point is definitely offline retail. Amazon Go, Amazon Go Grocery, and Amazon Fresh stores might be the eCommerce giant’s path to establish and expand their presence in offline retail - and it comes with a USP! The Amazon Go store technology and Amazon Fresh technology which the company believes will put them at the forefront of retail is - cashier-less checkout! Is this the future? 🔸EXTRA: The History of Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh Stores
The history of the Amazon Go store dates back to 2016 when Amazon first opened an Amazon Go store in Seattle to its employees only as a beta test. It was opened to the public in January 2018. Amazon described the first Amazon Go store as “a new kind of store with no checkout required”. This first store was basically a small convenience store around 1,800 square feet in size. Eight other stores were opened the same year, including three in Seattle, two in San Francisco, and three in Chicago. Most of these stores ranged in size from 1,200 to 2,300 square feet. Amazon, however, is still experimenting with the format of these stores. They opened the smallest Amazon Go store, a 450 square foot one, inside its office space above Macy’s in Seattle. On the other end of the scale, their Amazon Go Grocery are larger stores with more products. There are over 25 Amazon Go stores in the US right now.
