Tropical Storm Franklin has struggled today as it edges northwards towards the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The storm appears to be exhibiting multiple centers, and winds have weakened to 40 miles per hour. The storm is still expected to make landfall in the Dominican Republic and drop large amounts of rain in the immediate region around the track. Totals could reach up to 18 inches (450mm) near the landfall zone. Franklin is expected to take on a slow and wobbly track after it passes the Turks and Caicos islands, and will hang around for a time before shooting off towards the north. During this period, Franklin is expected to see better days where a significant hurricane is possible, and then a turn torwards the northeast possibly affecting Atlantic Canada.
Yesterday, Tropical Storm Harold formed in the western Gulf of Mexico, and made landfall in southern Texas. Harold moved inland and is now a depression straddling the Mexican border. Rainfall is expected to be considerable with around 4 inches further expected.
Emily was declared post-tropical some time ago, but is now looking respectable with a substantial burst of convection this evening. With models already suggesting that the storm could get a second wind as it speeds up through the subtropical regions, a redesignation could occur sooner than expected.
In the Western Pacific, a new area of interest has formed near the Philippines, and could be developing more quickly than suggested in our update this evening. The system is expected to move towards the Ryukyu islands and stall, and turn back again potentially. The other area of interest is still located east of the Mariana islands, and development is becoming more likely for this too.
In the Eastern Pacific, three areas of interest are gathering pace, with the middle of the three with the highest chance as it heads towards central Mexico. By the weekend, this potential storm could strike with strong winds near hurricane force and very heavy rainfall. In the meantime, a weaker system could affect Costa Rica and Nicaragua delivering 12 inches (300mm) of flooding rains. The third system may also form as it moves out towards the open ocean.
