We hit the hard deck for the first time in 2024 as the early season freeze hits the Uinta Mountains in November. Usually the Uintas are very hard to access in the Winter months as Mirror Lake Highway 150 is not maintained and thus shut down once there is too much snowfall. If you want to ice fish here you need to get out early and often. For our first ice of 2024 we head up the highway, through the trees, past the moose, and down to visit Lilly Lake and Butterfly Lake. We attempted pass lake but it was no more than 4 feet deep anywhere and moved to Lilly. Lilly lake had smooth glass ice with extremely windy conditions. The Ice always felt safe, strong ice. Early holes were about 3 inches max and as the sun rose and conditions got into 40 degree weather, the cracks were nasty, holes got down to 1-2 inches and felt way to sketchy to continue. The Ice at butterfly lake was snow covered, slushy, but decent in the middle, I did go completely through the edges at one point. The road conditions on mirror lake highway were great. All sigh were caught on a tungsten jig and a mealworm.
Comment below with any questions you have, I know we all get antsy for whatever information we can get this time of year.
