STORYLINE
BOLLYWOOD BIDS FAREWELL TO SHAMMI KAPOOR
Top Bollywood stars and members of the Indian film industry bid goodbye to the versatile Indian actor Shammi Kapoor as they gathered in large numbers for his funeral in Mumbai on Monday (15 AUG 2011).
Kapoor, 79, died Sunday (14 AUG 2011) after a long career in Bollywood.
Among those present to pay their last tributes to the legendary actor were Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Priyanka Chopra and Rishi Kapoor.
Bachchan posted on Twitter that the industry''s flamboyance and joi de verve had been lost with the death of Kapoor.
His doctor Bhupendra Gandhi said Sunday that Kapoor was admitted to Mumbai''s Breach Candy Hospital two days ago in critical condition.
He was on dialysis and died of kidney failure.
Kapoor was hailed for his lighthearted roles in movies.
He belonged to Bollywood''s well-known Kapoor family.
His brothers Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor also were successful actors, and his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, was a well-known theater personality of the 1950s.
The extended family has dominated the Hindi movie industry for decades and includes the current favorites Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.
Shammi Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood in 1953 and acted in successful movies including "Teesri Manzil," "Kashmir Ki Kali," "Junglee" and "Professor."
He also appeared in "Brahmchari" and "Janwar."
The celebrated actor was an avid internet buff and was the founder-chairman of the Internet Users Community of India.
He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
