(9 Feb 2022) Hundreds of Argentineans took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Tuesday to reject an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with whom the government of Alberto Fernandez is seeking to refinance a 44.5 billion dollars debt.
Left-wing parties, trade unions, social and student organisations gathered in front of the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires under the slogan "No to the IMF."
The government needs parliamentary support for the new payment plan agreed with the IMF to come into effect before 21 March, the date by which the South American country must disburse USD 2.8 billion of the original loan, an amount the government does not have available.
The Argentine government announced on January 28 that it had agreed with the IMF on an Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program to refinance the maturities of the next two-and-a-half years.
For its part, the country committed to reducing its fiscal deficit, lowering monetary issues, controlling price policies, controlling capital flight, and increasing international reserves.
The agency will carry out periodic reviews to control compliance with the goals.
Since 2020, Argentina has been in an arduous negotiation with the IMF to refinance the debt contracted in 2018 during the government of conservative Mauricio Macri in the midst of a currency crisis.
