M140i - YP66LFX/ YP66 LFX
25/06/2017 - UPDATE: Via my dealer, BMW have officially stated the sound is normal and within tolerance for these cars. It's a combination of the workings of the car as the parts heat up, expand/contract and work hard in general. It's normal for a performance car of this power and specification. Yes, mines louder and the sound behaviour is different than others, but normal nevertheless.
Case Closed.
Honestly guys, if you're considering one of these i'd seriously re-consider.

Original Transcript: September 2016 Build, M140i with approx 5,000 miles (May 2017) - The cars been doing this since approx 2,000 miles. Any drive mode, any gearbox mode - Gets worse as the car gets warmer...
The sound is load and rev related, I could be driving the car normally for an hour and the whine isn't there. A few minutes of going through the gears at full throttle and the sound slowly appears where it gets louder and louder. Ease off and drive normally and the sound dissipates.
