What do you do when you are being strongly tempted and everything in you wants to just give into the temptation?
Okay so temptation is a part of our every day life and there is no sense in praying for it to go away. So in this video I want to give you 3 strategies for how to handle temptation.
#1 – Anticipate the TEMPTATION – Prov. 27:12
“A wise person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simple go on blindly and suffer the consequences.”
In other words if you’re waiting until you are tempted to decide how you’re going to respond often times that’s too late. There are certain seasons in our lives when we can EXPECT to experience high levels of temptation. For example when you’re…
• Hungry (attention, physical touch, affirmation, etc.) – Esau – Gen. 25:34 - When there is something in your life that you strongly crave but you can’t have you’re going to be strongly tempted.
• Angry – Numbers 20
• Lonely – David - 2 Sam. 11:1-5
• Tired – Elijah - 1 Sam. 19
These are seasons when we need to HALT. We need to slow down and get some people around us to make sure that we don’t do anything foolish!
Second of all if it’s an area that you feel like you are one bad decision away from giving in to an area that you feel extremely weak in I want to encourage you to take some time to…
#2 – Ask yourself some very HARD QUESTIONS
• How is this going to hurt me? Financial, career, business, reputation, ministry, spiritual life, ability to share my faith with others are who waiting for me to prove to them that my faith is not real, etc.
• How is this going to hurt the people I love the most? How are the people who look up to me the most going to see me not if, but when I’m exposed? This could be your children, people you are mentoring, people at your job, etc.
• How will I feel about this tomorrow? We know how you feel about it right now but…will I regret this tomorrow?
So, my third and final point is to…
#3 – Stop playing around with TEMPTATION – One of the main reasons why many of us continue to fall into temptation is because we think we can leave it hanging around and our willpower is strong enough to resist. (late night Facebook chat, “innocent” lunch with co-worker you think is fine, etc.)
• Jesus said, “If your right hand is causing you to sin then cut it off!” He didn’t say put your hand down. In other words, He was suggesting for us to take radical action. In order to win the battle over temptation you may need to take some radical steps. Because the more we entertain the temptation the more comfortable we get with ignoring that voice inside that is telling us to stop.
• Delete phone numbers
• QUESTION: What radical steps are you currently taking or are you willing to take to greatly reduce the chances of you giving in to temptation? I’m not saying to cut your hand off but how can you expect to consistently scoop fire into your lap and not get burned? (PROVERBS 6:27)
• If someone paid you a million dollars would you stop?
So, if for whatever reason you do fall into sin and yield to the temptation, don’t punish yourself by getting depressed about it for 3 days. Confess your sin immediately before God, accept His forgiveness, repent and and move on.
