The 2022 Tudor Black Bay Pro GMT is the Rolex Explorer II 1655 tribute watch that many expected for the 2021 redesign of Rolex’s rugged dual time watch. But Rolex made few outward changes to its existing 42mm Explorer II, and Tudor went full retro. More than another variant of the Tudor Black Bay, the Black Bay GMT Pro is the closest thing to a Rolex 1655 re-edition that watch collectors will see. This is our full review of the 2022 Tudor GMT Pro.

At 39mm, the 2022 Black Bay GMT Pro is closer in size to the compact Black Bay Fifty-Eight than it is to the larger 41mm Black Bay GMT. Externally, the defining feature of the Black Bay GMT Pro is its 24-hour bezel. The ring includes a scale that hews closely to Rolex design language while incorporating the “radial” satin finish that recalls 1970s watches in general and Rolex’s Explorer II in particular. Tudor does not use Plexiglas crystals like many retro watch specialists, but it does employ a heavily domed sapphire to ensure the acrylic bezel look. Small bevels on the lugs recall the era when Rolex and Tudor watches shared cases.

Dial design of the Tudor 79470 incorporates a multitude of influences. The matte black dial base and “orange” 24-hour hand are the most direct references to the Explorer II 1655. A chapter ring and round indices can be read as a nod to 1950s and 1960s Tudor and Rolex Submariners. And the specific shape of the hands recalls the Tudor Submariner “snowflake” models of the late 1960s through mid-70s. Tudor uses applied solid blocks of ecru-colored super luminova to achieve a vintage aesthetic with modern details, and the same color is found on the dial printing, hands, hand lume, and date wheel.

Mechanically, the Tudor Black Bay GMT Pro is identical to the Black Bay GMT. Both watches incorporate two independent time zones: one in 12-hour format, and one in 24-hour format. The movement, which is made by Tudor subsidiary Kinessi, includes automatic winding by a center rotor and a 70-hour power reserve. This caliber includes an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring and a COSC Swiss chronometer certifications. Additional functions includes hacking seconds, a full balance bridge, and a free sprung balance wheel. The Tudor Black Bay GMT Pro is water resistant to 200 meters and includes a screw-down crown with vintage Tudor rose logo.
