Dan Snow explains how the roots of modern railways can be traced back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Coal was central to the story, it was extremely valuable, but only if it could be transported from the inaccessible hills and valleys where it was mined to the cities and factories where it was needed.
He shows how early engineers built railroads for horse drawn wagons, but these were still not enough to satisfy the demand for coal. Canals also carried coal, but these would freeze over in winter and dry out in summer. There was a need for a system of transport which could overcome the weather, the terrain and nature itself.
This clip is from the BBC series History of Railways. Dan Snow examines the development of the railways, from their beginnings as track-ways for coal carts in the early 18th century, to their pivotal effect in shaping modern Britain.

Teaching History?
The availability of coal and the advances in transport were two important reasons for Britain leading the world in the Industrial Revolution. Students could make notes from the clip as a starting point for further study with the aim of writing an essay giving their views on the relative importance of all the contributory factors leading to Britain's success. Was coal really the start of it all?
This clip is relevant for teaching History at Key Stage 3, GCSE, Third level, and National 4 and 5.
