"He said, what if the Danish national collection goes up in smoke or is stolen or whatever? What happens? So, I'm going to leave my collection as a reserve. If the Danish national collection goes up in smoke or whatever, then my collection will be a gift to the Danish state. So, the clock starts ticking when he passes. 100 years pass. If the Danish national collection is still in existence, which it is today, it triggers an auction sale, basically."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Helle Horsnaes, senior researcher, National Museum of Denmark:
"The pure fact that this collection has been closed for a hundred years makes it a legend. It is not just a collection. It's large and quite good, but it's also the fact that it's closed. When something becomes a mystery and closed to the public, it tends to become, well, a legend, a mystery. Well, it's like a fairy tale."
