In New York, the (1) train has its downtown terminus at the new South Ferry station, a 2-track stub-end facility that could handle two entire trains. It is located on a new spur built to the south of the original South Ferry station. The original station, located on a tight loop track with a single platform only long enough to handle the first 5 cars of a typical 10-car train, was closed when the new station opened.
The new South Ferry station suffered severe damage in Superstorm Sandy at the end of October, 2012, with the platform level and tunnels flooded to the ceiling and the mezzanine level flooded as well. (1) train service was cut back to Chambers Street, later restored to Rector Street after cleaning and repairs were made, but the damage at South Ferry was total.
Through the winter, work was done and as a result, at the beginning of April, 2013, (1) train service was restored to the "old" South Ferry loop station. I made my first-ever visit to that station yesterday, as seen in this video.
