Since 2022, the Northern Hail Project (NHP) has developed methods to better understand hailstorms through field damage observations. NHP is using this information to ground-truth the severity and extent of hail impacts. It is documenting in-field damage to building materials and components, crops, vehicles, and trees. And it is using these observations to better characterize storms and how they link to the type, severity, and intensity of Canada hail damage.
Simon Eng is the research meteorologist with the Northern Hail Project (NHP). Simon previously worked as a consultant and research scientist in climate change adaptation and engineering risk assessment in both private industry and public service capacities. His career has focused on the interaction between natural hazards and the built environment, focusing on impacts to buildings and critical infrastructure.
