GAME REVIEW IN DESCRIPTION
This is one of the few exclusives for the 3DO and I was looking forward to getting stuck in. Slayer is a dungeon crawler game carrying the Dungeons and Dragons name and after doing some research, it appears it is known for its tough difficulty.
From the start the player can create their own class or choose from a template, then they are placed in a randomly generated level.
After playing through the first level I indeed encounter the difficulties, mainly from how hard the monsters hit but also the recovery system is something quite unique. The player has their health as expected but also their hunger and when the player is low on health and their are no monsters nearby then they can rest and recover their health but their hunger goes down. Hunger or F.D can be restored by rations or food that the player can also find.
To complete a dungeon the player must roam around the level and look for a golden key, then along the outside edge of every level is a door which will lead down.
This concept may be familiar to Dungeons and Dragons players but it was something new to myself but once I got used to the game's mechanics and better at dodging the enemies attacks I did find going through the levels easier. In fact around 7 dungeons in I found some better equipment and was cruising through the dungeons and hunting every last enemy on each level.
It wasn't until the last two levels where the difficulty ramped up again, there was a decrease in the amount of rations available and the monsters, in particular a fire demon, really hit hard and where difficult to dodge their attacks. I did find myself looking for a way out as soon as possible instead of trying to loot the dungeons.
However, that proved to be a mistake as I reached the final boss on low health and had to mainly use a bow and arrow which I hadn't used throughout the whole game.
The graphics in this game are impressive considering for the time and contains many difficult enemies to encounter and the dungeons contain many different colour schemes to make each level different from the last. Its a shame you cannot see your weapons on screen but there is a lot of different weapons to pick up.
The sound is basic however, with simple swipe sound effects for the player's attacks and grunts for the enemies although you can hear enemies creeping in the distance which does add to a spooky atmosphere on some levels.
I wondered if lack of Dungeons and Dragons knowledge hampered my efforts in this game as there were some spells which I used and just didn't know what they did. For maximum enjoying I'd recommend googling a few of the spells that the player picks if your know of Dungeons and Dragons is non-existent like mine.
In addition if I went through the game again I don't think I'd hoard so many weapons that needed identifying, waiting for a spell to identify them.
Overall, I did enjoy this game, it was challenging, sometimes frustrating but there was a lot of content to explore and it does have great replayability with the numerous character classes to play with and the randomly generated levels.
