OneFist, a Pro-Ukrainian hacker group, has confirmed that they’ve hacked a Russian low Earth orbit satellite communications network called - GoNets.
Once they gained access to databases of the network, hackers deleted the entire database of their users, forcing the network to go down for 5 days.
GoNets is used to provide global communication to users living in remote locations not covered by ground-based networks. According to OneFist, Gonets provided services to fishing and logistics companies, and also multiple state and military organisations.
Amongst the Gonets’ clients were cruise and anti-ship missile maker, a military electronics manufacturer and even distant Federal Security Bureau offices.
OneFist’s member, going by “Thraxman” commented that a lot of these companies do not acknowledge they use Gonets.
That doesn’t stop hackers from deleting every client’s details from the Gonets database. Due to not having full permissions, hackers had to do it by hand, constantly pressured by the time - admins were regularly monitoring the network.
The entirety of the attack was possible because unlike many satellite networks, Gonets kept its CRM databases on the open internet, without any protection or firewall. According to “Voltage” another member of OneFist says that sensitive systems are typically not so easily accessed, such a lax level of security would be considered “madness” anywhere on the west.
This attack is the latest in a series of cyberattacks against Russia, led by Pro-Ukraine hacker groups. The flames of cyber war keep burning, with Russia retaliating with DDoS attacks against countries supporting Ukraine. As long as the conflict continues, we are bound to see even more cyberattacks happening from both sides.
